The eco-friendly trend is making its way into more and more mainstream industries in the present day. We have seen everything from green light bulbs to green roofs emerge as products and concepts that are in high demand. The development and support of these "green" ideas seem to be making the most progress on the west coast of the United States, and today's eco-friendly product is no different.
In San Francisco, one mother decided that the choices offered for her daughter's playhouse were not sufficient. Gitane Royce wanted her child to be able to play in a structure that was sturdy, dependable, and eco-friendly. Since she has a degree in environmental science, she was able to put her education to good use by launching the company, Modern Playhouse. Modern Playhouse specifically offers, "...sustainable, modular and modern play structures for toddlers and school-age children". The concept seems to be catching on as Modern Playhouse grows in popularity throughout California and much of the west coast.
Modern Playhouse offers its customers a choice between two models of eco-friendly play structures designed for either a children's bedroom or playroom. The first is The Wedge House, complete with standard openings and indoor/outdoor openings to facilitate participation from the whole family. This model will run you a total cost of about $1,250. The higher-end model is called The Circle House, modeled after a design of Scandanavian fishing cottages. The Circle House is characterized by its gable-roof style and circle window. It costs about $1,450.

The Wedge House
All the eco-friendly play structures designed by Modern Playhouse are made of woods that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. This certification clears the wood as having been treated with non-toxic, naturally pigmented finishes, and lead-free hardware and fasteners.
One of the best parts about these playhouses is that a large portion comes pre-assembled in the package. Modern Playhouse says that the entire assembly should take two people about 30 minutes to complete. That is a major selling point for the product they offer, simply because so many people get frustrated trying to build tree houses and play structures for their children.
Now Modern Playhouse is getting ready to expand the business. They are already offering a furniture set for a much more affordable price of $250, and plan to launch their line of outdoor eco-friendly playhouses in the spring.

The Circle House
The Modern Playhouse play structures offer a fantastic product for the children's toy market. Not only do they entertain children in a fun and safe way, but they also introduce kids to the concept of environmentalism at any early age. The children who are playing in these eco-friendly houses now will have to carry the torch of the "going green" movement in the next 20 to 30 years.
While kids are at this young age, there are extremely impressionable in their ideas and beliefs, which will solidify as they mature and govern their thought patterns. It is important to implement the concept of eco-friendliness in the fundamentals of their education at this time. If done correctly, kids will grow up to think that treating the planet and its resources with respect is the norm, and anyone who pollutes or is wasteful is not acting properly.
Items like the eco-friendly playhouses will affect the conscience of the children who use them in a positive way, by further reinforcing the premises that we as a society have been trying desperately to nail down.
